"While they were talking and debating these
things, Jesus himself approached and began to accompany them (but their eyes
were kept from recognizing him)."
Luke 24:15-16
The post-resurrection appearances of Jesus all have one thing in common: the disciples do not initially recognize Jesus when he appears to them. You'd think that the disciples would be the ones who would "get it" - they knew Jesus better than anyone while he was on earth. But instead, even those closest to Jesus did not initially recognize him - it took some action or word spoken by Jesus to reveal to them who he really was. The central essence of who Jesus was on earth carried through, even though his form had changed enough to make him initially unrecognizable.
The members of Gathered by Christ are on a pilgrimage - one towards a resurrected communal life in a different form. Our Lenten discernment revealed that continuing on in our current form is not where God is calling us anymore. The call God has placed in our hearts is for our members to join with other congregations. Our future will look different, but the essence of our Christian vocation has not changed. We are still called to service in the name of Jesus Christ and to worship God with our whole heart.
